Peacock Bass Fish Identification - The Distinct Traits To Help You Spot Them

Peacock Bass

When it comes to fish identification of peacock bass, there are several species of this so called bass, which are actually from the Cichlid family and are really not related to the largemouth.

The largest of them is the Speckled Peacock that can reach a size of over 3 feet. The Royal Peacock is the smallest and reaches a max length of just under 2 feet.

Depending on the species, these colorful fish can have light speckles against an impressive backdrop of shades of bright green, orange, blue and gold. Most of these fish can be identified by 3 vertical stripes along their sides and a conspicuous spot outlined in yellow on their tail fins that looks like the eyes on a peacocks tail feathers. The vertical stripes tend to fade late in adulthood. The male Peacocks will usually sport a hump on top of their head.

These bass are known for their ferocious nature. They have highly predatory habits and are skilled hunters. The Peacock will strike out of just being territorial. They have also been known to cause damage to, or even destroy fishing gear.

The Peacock Bass enjoy warm water and can be found in shady areas around bridges, bends dead ends and around fallen trees. They will tend to feed in shallow waters especially in areas where there is overhanging vegetation from the shoreline.

Here's a pretty good article on the Butterfly Pecock.
